Hatha Yoga

A preparatory stage of physical purification that renders the body fit for the practice of higher meditation. The asanas (poses) and Pranayama (breath work)  characterize Hatha yoga. The word Hatha is a compound of the words Ha and Tha meaning sun and moon. Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold, fire and water, yin and yang, male and female, positive and negative. Hatha attempts to balance mind and body through physical postures, purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation.

Hatha yoga has becoe popular in the west as purely a physical exercise, separate from its original purpose. Currently, about 30 million Americans and about 5 million Europeans practice some form of hatha yoga.
